BOURBOULIA

This is a special event of the Carnival that similar does not occur in Greece. The Bourboulia considered one of the oldest events where their exact starting date still remains unknown. Historical scholars, however, the Carnival chronologically identify the dance of Bubbles, shortly after the construction completion of the Municipal Theatre “Apollo” by Ernst Ziller, around 1872.

In the interwar years the showman Andreas Loverdos baptized with the name “Bubbles” (savory meat boiling), then the afternoon dances, they did not require any special preparation.

The Bourboulia are dances where women remain anonymous under a black domino and a black mask, while the men wear formal suit and choose the pady ignoring their identity, at least for that night.
